Therapist Marina Garofano from Connections Counseling Work says bullying can affect self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and willingness to trust others.
Therapist Marina Garofano from Connections Counseling Work says bullying can affect self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and willingness to trust others.
"It can also go as far as eating disorders, it can impact suicidal ideation, really how people are viewing themselves, so it can be pretty significant," says Garofano.
For parents, Garofano says, it is important to be proactive.
"Check social media, set some limits around social media, and be transparent," says Garofano.
And it is critical to respond with validation and support.
"There is a lot of shame with bullying that can happen, sometimes children might hold a lot inwards," says Garofano.

“COVID was a huge setback for a lot of people,” said Maria Luisi, therapist for Connections Counseling Center on Daniel Island.
Luisi’s main focus is treating people with eating disorders and said they act as coping mechanisms for underlying anxiety, depression or other mental illnesses someone may be going through.
“The eating disorder is a person’s attempt at getting better, trying to have more control over their life and their food,” Luisi told The Post and Courier.
